Little Cakes Little Gallery recently re-located to a 'kind-of' storefront, with a small gallery in the front, on 6th St - between Aves B & C, .. still in the East Village, but NO longer in Hanna's former space: her small 3rd floor apt. living room! .. (where despite its size, some of the city's most astonishing installations took place - transforming the space, totally, each time). Little Cakes Little Gallery, 625 E 6th Street #1B, NYC. Sept 30, 2006 - you can begin to catch a glimp of the inaugural show, through the bottom half of the window, behind the iron window guard. |
the only sign that this is Little Cakes, is the small LC sticker on the door - Little Cakes Little Gallery, E 6th Street, Sept 30, 2006 |
HANNA FUSHIHARA ARON, founder/director, Little Cakes, greets you. the ground floor storefront is really an archetypal NYC 'railroad' apt. The front is the gallery, presenting the inaugural show; 'taza taza' by GUILLERMINA BAIGUERA and JULIAN GATTO. The small gallery office is just behind Hanna, and behind the wood & glass doors are the living quarters. there's even a flowering yard in the back. Little Cakes Little Gallery, Sept 30, 2006 |

GUILLERMINA BAIGUERA, 'Conejo', pencil, colored pencil on paper, 'taza taza', Little Cakes Little Gallery, Sept 30, 2006 - this delicate yet eloquent show scored a review by HOLLAND COTTER, in the 'Art In Review' section of the New York Times, Friday, Sept 29, 2006 - which said, in part ... "that the gallery hasn't increased in size is important to its craft-based, private feeling, nostalgic-utopian aesthetic. Guillermina Baiguera and Julian Gatto exemplify it ..." |
the HOLLAND CARTER article goes on to state: .. "Based in Buenos Aires, they (Guillermina Baiguere and Julian Gatto) sometimes collaborate, but mostly do separate but related work. Mr. Gatto is showing several watercolor drawings of semi-abstract, leaflike forms, as well as biomorphic embroideries. Ms. Baiguera has expert floral drawings in pencil and a variety of embroideries, minutley detailed and painting-like... Much of their work is inspired by and plays off, everyday objects - china cups, ice cream molds, glass lampshades .. Many such items are on display in the gallery, and at first glance it's almost impossible to distinguish them from the art. EVERYTHING, OLD and NEW, seems intimately connected in this sweetspirited show in one of the city's more distinctive galleries." THE DIKER PAVILION for NATIVE ARTS and CULTURES, at the SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM of the AMERICAN INDIAN, is the newest facility to be carved out of their landmarked Beaux-Arts building, know locally as .. the old customs house, (more properly termed the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House) at One Bowling Green, just across from Battery Park, at the southernmost tip of Manhattan. Opening to the public on Sept 23, 2006, it is a 6,000 sq. ft. space which features 10 exhibition cases, (set into historic window niches), 2 interactive learning stations, theatrical lighting, a film screen, and a custom built 'sprung maple' floor - for native dance exhibitions.
The opening exhibit, its title says it all - 'Beauty Surrounds Us', features masterworks of native cultures throughout the hemisphere, from the museum's collection, including children's clothing, games and musical instruments. As the title and the exhibits make clear, the integration of art and daily life, transcends the separations of craft and art and spirit, which our society
in its rush to 'super civilization' is just beginning to truly comprehend, anew.
'Beauty Surrounds Us' was curated by museum public programs manager JOHANNA GORELICK.
The museum is free and open every day from 10am to 5pm and on Thursday til 8pm.
