STEVE POWERS (STEPHEN POWERS) aka ESPO – was born and raised in Phillie’s Overbrook neighborhood. He has resided in New York City since 1995. He mostly uses billboards and storefronts, to create his “illicit outdoor murals” – one of his earliest projects, in NYC – being a huge billboard that seamlessly offered up the invitation to call ‘ESPOLAND’ and gave a phone number. Not all his projects are “illicit” – as well as having served up several exhibits at DEITCH PROJECTS in SOHO, he is perhaps best known, in NYC, for the very legit – collaborative project he dreamed up with CREATIVE TIME, beginning in 2004, and in which he participated and co-curated – the ‘DREAMLAND ARTIST CLUB’ – a “project on CONEY ISLAND AMUSEMENT BOARDWALK in which he and several other artists worked with low-income business owners to improve commercial signage” – making a trip out to Coney Island, a must-see artist destination.
At the same time – STEVE POWERS maintained a small studio out there, in a storefront, right next to the CONEY ISLAND ‘MUSEUM’, a FORTUNE TELLER, some rides, and a POPEYE’S – which he called – the DREAMLAND ARTIST CLUBHOUSE.

JULIAN GATTO is a graduate of COOPER UNION for the Advancement of Science and Art. He has shown in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Frankfurt, and his home town of Buenos Aires.
some excerpts from the WRITTEN STATEMENT – JULIAN posted for the show:
1.
. . “After living in New York for four years, I decided to move back to Buenos Aires last year, in May. Before moving to New York Ihad always lived n this city, in its central araes (mostly buildings). This time I wanted to live a little further out, in a neighbourhood similar to the one where my grandparents’ house was . . .
I visited my grandparents’ house after years of being away and found many objects and things that at the time I thought represented this feeling that I was trying to have in my work . . . (and worked on) installations that featured these objects. . .
(TAZA TAZA at LITTLE CAKES/2006)
. . . To me the idea of recycling and re-using was also important . . . (and, not just retrieving family history). Why are these things covered in dust when thy can still be used? Recovering these items was a way of refusing the need to produce new ones. Although those objects … gave off a feeling of warmth, I was also aware that they belonged to a different time. Nostalgia for the past is somewhat implicit in them. But I didn’t want to be nostalgic about the past. The present is very far from being ideal, but living in the past isn’t the solution either. Even though looking back can help us solve problems, now I wan to concentrate on the future.”
2.
“In February, I was in Japan. Walking around certain areas of Tokyo . . .(old Eastern Tokyo) . . . I noticed several things that reminded me of the places and things that I love in Buenos Aires; flower planters on the sidewalk and between narrow spaces between houses and corrugated steel sheets nailed to old wood homes. It was this warmth again, which to me, had to do with a certain kind of precariousness. People usually associate this concept with poverty or lack of resources. Something precarious is almost dysfunctional and unwanted. Things should be functional, new, and pristine. We buy them because we feel we can’t make anything that could work or look good.
When I came back from Japan, I traveled to two small towns in Argentina: Buratovich and Arcadia. There as well, I kept finding people that were solving some of their needs using recycled or found materials. They made structures that supported things, or that provided shelter; greenhouses that allowed plants to live in winter or tree houses that could be used for play. They adapted and transformed vehicles that could move around according to their needs and made stands that sold homemade food and other things. All these things worked. They did not fall apart. And although they all used the same basic materials . . . each one reflected something about the person that had made it . . . These things embodied a certain dedication, love even, and inventiveness. I decided I wanted to use this mode of making into my work.”
3.
‘. . . mobility and portability have become an important part of my work. Along with a watercolor box, I can take a piece of paper with me and paint where ever I want. Luckily, water is still available for free in most parts of the world.
. . . (for this show) all the materials needed would be collected from scraps and found things. The structures will be precarious, but will not fall down . . . and once the show is over, the whole thing can be disassembled or reassembled into something else.
The gouache and watercolor drawings reflect these ideas of mobility. They show things that you can carry around, or places you could go to and activities you could do once you’re there.”

MARIE-JOSEE KRAVIS & HENRY KRAVIS – PHOTO/NANCY SMITH/artloversnewyork.com
take a look at that clip again, link !! – he’s even got his god damn logo !! – warongreed.org – imbedded into MY photo – all the photos – on the top left hand side – like some kind of TV station ownership – he doesn’t just steal the photo – he usurps ownership.
besides being so boring.
and, this is not just an internet clip – this is (supposedly) just PART ONE of a 4 PART MOVIE SERIES – !!! anybody who’d fund this guy – gotta be a bigger idiot than can be pleasantly imagined. he’s so bad – I’m almost thinking he is part of a larger, as yet unknown ‘conspiracy’ or agenda of some kind. he can’t seriously think he is going to make it as a filmmaker based on this utterly unoriginal clip – no matter how much NEW YORK TIMES PRESS he receives. plus, what kind of film industry people would want to work with a scum bag, who from the get go – so wantonly disrespects one of the key foundations of the professional media – copyright protection. it also carries serious financial liabilities into any bigger plans he might have for this pathetic self-promoting vehicle.
ROBERT GREENWALD – take note: YouTube, Google, and WIKIPEDIA, definitely don’t like this kind of action – copyright violation – on their sites – it’s bad for their credibility – and speaks toward rigid and wider government scrutiny & controls. it’s not ‘new world-green’ & nobody wants to see copyright infringement & content/ownership theft take the place of freedom for real creativity.. and forward thinking.

JIM KRANTZ’S PHOTOGRAPH, ‘Stretchin’ Out’ (1997) – taken for a MARLBORO AD/
PHOTO COURTESY: THE NEW YORK TIMES
here’s the RANDY KENNEDY ARTICLE – WHICH SAYS IT ALL – PUBLISHED in the NEW YORK TIMES/
THURSDAY DECEMBER 6, 2007 !!
read it !!: ‘If The Copy Is an Artwork, Then What’s The Original?’
and don’t miss the slide show: more pix, here !!
from the NEW TIMES SLIDE SHOW – the banner that lines the streets uptown with a unattributed JIM KRANTZ PHOTO IMAGE – PROUDLY PROCLAIMING – the RICHARD PRINCE RETROSPECTIVE at THe GUGGENHEIM – PHOTO BY MARILYNN K. YEE/THE NEW YORK TIMES
this is the same image that is the poster for the show – doing brisk business at $9.95 a pop.
looks like they did change a few pixels on this image – they deleted the ciggie !
you’d have to laugh if it wasn’t, so sad.
Image how Mr. Kranz felt encountering that banner floating in the air so grandly. One can pretty much conclude he wasn’t too happy – the article states that he didn’t – “investigate much further to see if any other photos hanging in the museum might be his own, but said of his visit that day, ‘When I left, I didn’t know if I should be proud, or if I looked like an idiot’.”
guess what, yo, you do look an idiot to have let this go down, and for so long – and, why are you so defensive in the article – the beauty of the photos isn’t in their so-called ‘conceptual content’ – as rephrased (?) by RICHARD PRINCE – it’s in the beauty of YOUR VISION.
!!
at the very least, RICHARD PRINCE, & THE GUGGENHEIM – should give him a photo credit.
that’s an unbelievable ommission. JIM KRANTZ is 100% right on – to want people to know who took the photo(s) and to be recognized more widely. Apparently he’s not even an “asterik” in the catalog.
and it isn’t as if a series of in-house photographers took these photos – it seems pretty much – all these companies turned to JIM KRANTZ for his ability to produce these “iconic” American images & he doesn’t even get an asteriked photo credit – he should get a book. what’s up here.
the only thing RICHARD PRINCE got right is the brutal street smarts in American culture and business – he who gets over first – wins.
and, you got love RICHARD PRINCE’S 1992 statement regarding his quote unquote “rustling” of the MARLBORO aesthetic – and MR KRANTZ’S WORK – “No one was looking. This was a famous
campaign. If you’re going to steal something, you know, you go to the bank.”
we’ll give HOLLAND COTTER – also of the NEW YORK TIMES – the last word – with the neat way he ended his review (posted today, FRIDAY DEC 7, 2007) on the PAUL McCARTHY CHOCOLATE FACTORY at MACCARONE – “but that’s great art for you: It may give you a sugar high, but it has dirty little secrets” !!!
