~JIM JOE VS LEWY . . ‘PIECE OF DIRT’ / CHINATOWN POP-UP / OPENING PIX: PART 1
STICK VS BUBBLE ? not !!
it was a . . . COLLABORATION !!!
JIM JOE VS LEWY / COLLABORATIVE DRAWINGS 2014 – 2016 / ‘PIECE OF DIRT’
48 BOWERY – CHINATOWN POP-UP, DOWNTOWN NYC
the show opened FRI NITE APRIL 1, 2016
and ran daily til APRIL 10, 2016 / 12-5 PM.
48 BOWERY, the former home of a famous Dim Sum palace.
TAYLOR McKIMENS . . looking as wonderfully raw & ‘distressed’ – as the show.
they scrubbed, maybe power washed the walls, but the resultant ‘camo’ of layers . . the residue of history remains. nice. patina.
and a great offset . . to the all-white canvases / black line drawings.
JIM JOE VS LEWY, ‘BOY VS ROAD’
OIL ON CANVAS, 36 x 48 INCHES
($4,500 USD)
they say the ‘thick’ lines (bubble, bubble) are the handiwork of LEWY, and the thin lines are by JIM JOE, (stick, stick – you pick).
JIM JOE VS LEWY, ‘TRAVEL VS ROCK’.
OIL ON CANVAS, 36 x 38 INCHES
($4,500 USD)
some pieces have words, some don’t. all are strange and disquieting.
and quiet. many many waters run deep – as the saying goes.
OLIVIA BALLARD, SAMUEL PUGLIA, JONATHAN PUGLIA.
SPENCER TULLIS. Spencer been making some pretty harsh DIY films lately.
can’t help but think back to his stupendous, towering diy folk art mama, in the 15 WARREN ST / New Years Eve – 2014 (huge group) show.
and, then the masterly & exquisite hyper0real blow-out Egyptian time-traveler of 170 SUFFOLK, June 2014.
MATT JACKSON, was also featured in that first 170 SUFFOLK knock-down . .
paintings of some kind of small poppy-like, pop art flowers – on some kind of distressed background.
in a better word: super distressed romantic.
JACK IRVING, TOMMY MALEKOFF.
JACK IRVING also had a piece in the 170 SUFFOLK show. a kind of huge smashed-up . . car ?
looked great against the cinder block walls.
DANE ‘DIRT’ & CHLOE LLORET . . .
DIRT is kind of the bad boy leader-of-the pack, or at least of the party. & a brilliant, in his own way, maker of very brief, but very cool/casual, on the lowdown . . short films.
check out @danedirt
PARIS VENTURE and . . photographer, filmmaker ANDREW KASS.
Andrew also had a great install in the 170 SUFFOLK show, a pay telephone . . . yep.
and a ‘grinning’ coffin in 15 WARREN.
while PARIS is apparently – the true blue behind-the-scenes key ‘grip’ of the scene, being the ‘producer’ who has the architectural skills, know-how & creative design eyeball . . who produced (hands-on) & designed this show, and also I believe 170 SUFFOLK, and prob 15 WARREN, as well.
very quiet, very visionary. no wonder their shows come across so well.
serious skills. beyond the beyond. way beyond the ordinary, for sure.
JIM JOE VS LEWY, ‘HAMMER VS EGG’.
OIL ON CANVAS, 36 x 48 INCHES
($4,500 USD)
this one says: ‘The return of the Past’.
that’s the hand of LEWY.
JIM JOE VS LEWY – great install by PARIS VENTURE . . against a very raw backdrop.
poetic & steel-ey.
edge-y.
note the canvas hanging hardware at the top. the show was designed & managed perfectly, and in fact beyond all expectation. mesh with the surroundings, flush with the works.
the view to the ceiling. often a cause for despair in a pop-up. not here.
the view to the floor. beyond the beyond. mesmerizing.
JIM JOE VS LEWY, ‘PONY VS HORSE’
OIL ON CANVAS, 36 x 48 INCHES
($4,500)
drama, drama, drama. fork in the road.
talk about ‘pouring on’ the metaphors.
life is a comic / tragedy.
nobody is arguing with that.
you go your way, I’ll go – mine.
