~HENRY CHAPMAN . . writes up BLINN & LAMBERT / MICROSCOPE, LAST WEEKEND – thru JAN 14
HENRY CHAPMAN wrote . . .
a wonderful, short & to-the-point essay . . both elegant & scientific !!
on the BLINN & LAMBERT, ‘New Grey Planet’ show, still up at Microscope, Brooklyn – thru this weekend.
I especially liked how ‘informed’ his take was, and how he was able to visualize & ‘pull out’ so many different, yet specific elements. I was also . . absolutely stunned by his last sentence, & the essay’s conclusion:
“Expressivity isn’t a given – it’s a project.” (!!!!)
which mirrored my own conclusion – that above all else, ‘New Grey Planet’ is a . . trip.
a 3-D immersive production, that’s made to be seen / & experienced – so go see it while you can.
everyone comes out – with their own version, their own sense of what they had just . . stepped into. a dark room, a blast of red & blue light.
an open format, unspecified sci fi narrative, and the mysterious life . . of ordinary objects.
there is no blatant human presence.
“like PONGE before them, the artists (BLINN & LAMBERT / NICHOLAS STEINDORF & KYLE WILLIAMS) . . find life in these everyday things through twin acts of observation & imagination.”
~HENRY CHAPMAN.
for the record:
it was super great of MICROSCOPE, to live up to its name & mission . . and bring these young artists’ visionary & ground-breaking debut show to Brooklyn / NYC.

HENRY CHAPMAN’s essay on ‘NEW GREY PLANET’ . . for ‘artcritical’ begins:
“Milk glass floats under a pendulum of light .. it’s effect both vivid and spectral enough to recall FRANCIS PONGE’S assessment of the mollusk , ‘a being – almost – a quality.’
that phrase making a good ‘5 word’ . . summation of the entire show, in all its permutations, itself.
HENRY CHAPMAN: “Every object has a shadow teeming with associative resonances. In one of the most strangely poetic moments … the shadow of a porcelain deer figurine is partially absorbed and erased by a stream of time-released water.”
HENRY CHAPMAN: “Expressivity isn’t a given – it’s a project.”
