~ROSS BROWN . . caught me !! / LIVING DANGEROUSLY !!

Yeah, those . . were the days !!

hell ya, living dangerously amongst total strangers, without social distancing, masks.
or disinfectant. no sink. no incessant hand washing. bad DIY haircuts, and zoom etc.
5 star sonic jet fly-overs & 12 hr work days. radio djs whining about being in their bedrooms to get away from the wife. medical experts coming at you from their living rooms, home cubbies, or bedrooms, depending on the pay scale. a little TMI re the 6 o’clock news anchors, but hey great to see everyone else has a wilted orchid – they still hang onto, too.

the art work was gritty enough – all on it’s own.
and, come to think of it / it did actually presage a ‘diseased-out’ future, bye the way.

I have no idea who he is, and I have never met him.
but, damn if he didn’t take the absolute best photo of me – ever !!

doing my favorite pre-Corona activity, . . .
a deep dive into a gritty, hardcore, off-the-wall . . pop-up opening !!

I’m super glad, he apparently reads artlovers, now / esp in his profession.

though, it looks like it took him 4 years to figure out – who I was ?!!
he certainly had no idea . . when he first took that photo.

he just recently posted it / tagging . . me, this past April 1.
yeah . . April Fools Day, and also echoing the opening’s very very April Fools date, too.
but, I was not going to post a photo of myself on April Fools Day (!!!)

even though,

just in case you didn’t process it / re: my last post . .
DAN LOXTON, a stubborn & gritty young artist, based upstate, near Hudson NY . .
def caught the current / novel corona virus crisis / zeitgest in his current show,
‘Dan in Real Life’, now up at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum, Newburgh, NY.

the tiny invader . . takes on the big institutions, and global humanity.

and more so, both figuratively and literally, re: pure painterly theory / but esp because Dan, as a hardcore indie ‘upstate’ (read: upstart) artist . . showing his work in an out-of-the-ordinary / but incredibly beautiful extraordinary location / very much represents the underdog, re the established art world / and he is a very much a small ‘particle’ – in the mainstream art world food chain, to pack such a great punch / such a huge statement.

the David Goliath myth / swings both ways.

the virus is def taking global humanity & civilization as we know it, or knew it / to it’s knees.

when you factor in, that this show must have been at least several months, in the planning, and as such predates the corona virus attack . . . damn / damn.
Dan nailed it.

go, go . . indie rebel / go, go . . Newburgh !!!
where you will also find: DANIEL GIORDANO, & VICKI ISLAND / SAMUEL BOEHM . . !!!
just to mention a few other, out-size / local & very ambitious talents . . !!

the Karpeles pop-up site / a very austere & conservative venue / def underscores the message of the invader threat vs the widely rooted, in historical establishment & laws of being & commerce /
or: life as we knew it.
plus it’s a manuscript . . ‘archive’.


the brute quality of the work is really interesting, but so is it’s shallow, fluttering 3-d depth.
it comes across as a ‘particle’ – as opposed to a flat surface / an ‘invader’.
plus . . it has the urgency of a letter being delivered !!
harsh news / bad news, wake-up call . . . folks,
very very nice.

note: the exhibit runs thru . . . JUNE 2020 /
note: call ahead to see if it’s actually still open to the public ?
all non-essential locales are now closed.
not sure if this includes small town rural / urban museums, but probably, yes. closed.

while Haley’s exhibit was looking back . . at childhood, and childhood coming to an end / and maybe not so happily, but very profoundly.
MOLLY’S show was very minimalist . . and super clean / in other words a germ-free .. FUTURE VISION !!!!
but, still human ‘feelings’ . . dominate.

besides some seriously intense & strange work, including a Soho sidewalk pop-up series / he also curated some pretty whack great art shows in the past few years, incl. the ground-breaking,’THE BIG SHORT’ /
a very inspired group show of 9 ‘alternative’ / very indie curatorial projects / which he co-curated with also then fellow Hunter MFA student, EMILY JANOWICK . . which took place in the Hunter Artists Institute basement office uptown.

you can see, if you can / most probably temporarily closed to public right now ??
