NEW YORK ARTISTS – ON THE MOVE
BENEVOLENCE – OVER VIOLENCE !! !! !! !!
R. BLAIR SULLIVAN – IN VERMONT, THE BEAUTIFUL GREEN MOUNTAIN STATE.
& if bye any chance . . you knew, or heard of Goddard College / located in Plainfield, Vermont. .
back in the 70s, then you know I went there, and never really – came back.
it was the first open curriculum classroom college, ever . . .
I was in the pottery studio hand-building 24/7.
The Who – ‘Magic Bus’ was the song we lived by.
there was a lot of folk art study, primal woodblock printing, new age weaving and radical architecture DIY & salvage among others / lots of wood, windows, and not too many square corners.
Baba Ram Dass caravans to San Francisco – left from the school’s sunny meadows, which were wild-flowered and wild, as we all were – on their journey west / and it was of course, the original home to the now famous, Bread & Puppet Theater.
I was the one & only exchange student from Montreal (!!) (global), & therefore attended tuition-free (!!) (benevolent). the irony, maybe not / being it was the most expensive school in the U.S. at the time.
it was so, so . . the best & strangest year of my life. it was hard to leave.
Quebec was very conflicted, and language rights fascist at the time.
‘STREAM 5: GIVE and TAKE’ . . . with:
Xinhao Cheng, Wallis Couverte, Juneau Projects, Gwen Smith, Haim Steinbach, R. Blair Sullivan, Tomoe Tsutsmi, & Mans Wrange.
Two Chairs, AUG 10-11, 2019 / 12-5 PM
South Windham, Vermont 05359
TWO CHAIRS . . is a “curatorial enterprise made up of artists, curators, and thinkers. This year Two Chairs is expanding its program during August by combining its annual group exhibition in and around a stream in South Windham, Vermont entitled ‘Stream Chapter 5: Give & Take’ . . with an artist residency in collaboration with Meadows Bee Farm that will take place concurrently. We propose . . to create an event that reaches out to an even larger audience – local, national and international. For several years, we have curated group exhibitions that have primarily investigated the effects of human activity on the natural environment. This year our project will include a range of artists who work in a more participatory manner by exploring ideas of benevolence, sharing and care both locally, and globally.”
see: STREAM CHAPTER 5 – TWO CHAIRS / KICKSTARTER
TWO CHAIRS . . “since 2014, Two Chairs has produced multiple projects that stage dynamic associations between artists and unexpected sites – including a stream in Vermont, St.Mark’s Bookstore in NYC, and a Manhattan living room in an old-school Yorkville apartment.”

cold porcelain with spirulina / 13 x 7 x 2 in.
it’s hand-sculpted & the spirulina – is mixed into the clay. think – on that.
spirulina: filamentous cyanobacteria which form tangled masses in warm alkaline lakes in Africa and Central and South America / prepared as a food or food additive / powder / is a rich source of many vitamins and minerals. . . . “It is incredibly healthy.” “It increases energy levels.”
but . . watch out for contaminated strands, “if grown in unsafe conditions”, i.e. alongside some bad character toxic algae.
bio fact: applies to all life forms, apparently.

the Two Chairs logo – very cool.

NEW YORK ARTISTS – ON THE MOVE
well, everybody knows KAWS went to Japan.
what’s amazing . . is:
1. what a ‘cult’ hero’s welcome KAWS got over there.
BRIAN DONNELLY actually showed up, (or had to) in person to camp / more like tent,
with the lucky ones who won tix to pitch cookie-cutter style tents & roast marshmallows in tiny identical bonfires . . around ‘Companion’, as if the blown-up sculpture was . . a water fall ?
well, come on, the view of Mt Fuji – is amazing.
the great HOKUSAI – is probably rollin’ his eyes, from the grave !!
but it’s so damn so flat plastic graphic, he’d love it.
2. the cross transfer of this solitary, angst-ridden lonely figure going over, so huge in Japan, esp among the leading edge designers, while Hello Kitty cousins, aunts & uncles, rainbow unicorn ponies, powder puffy girlies, anime sailor cuties, and glitter-trippy mushrooms of all sizes . . have fractured into a gazillion million cultural take-over pieces, esp among the youngest here ?
I mean, the KAWS . . ‘Companion’ Macy’s Thanksgiving Day balloon, was only shown / flown . . once, in 2012, the year it was made made, and presented with great fanfare, btw.
it was a big fail / ‘too negative’, lol.
there’s d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y a cultural ‘thesis’, waiting to be written – there.
bet, NARA . . is bawling his brains out – with jealousy.
*NARA as in one-word name, (you know – like Madonna),
doesn’t even google anymore – without his full moniker: Yoshitoma Nara.
Nara was pumped up to be a big art star in the 80s.
how the once mighty – fall.
ditto: Murakami.
like I said: waiting for the grand thesis / that I don’t have the patience to do in full.
writing a blog ? / stuck in the fast lane.
and, yet maybe that’s all you need / the heads-up.

DETROIT HOMESTEADING / NEW YORK ARTISTS – ON THE MOVE
JEFFREY TRANCHELL has a great, great piece . . .
in the SAFE GALLERY POP-UP: ‘THE BURN SHOW’ / SAT JULY 20, 2019
(see post below for details)
it seems as if a whole bunch of the art is going to go up in flames – in the bonfire ??!!!
JEFFREY TRANCHELL . . ‘Burn Hat’ / YES !!!! YES !!!! & MORE YES !!!!
this baby – was made to burn !!!
hand-made specifically for the show, it’s a DIY wicker-style ‘hat’.
ps: the ‘D’ is for Dylan, as in fellow Detroit-based artist DYLAN SPAYSKY – who has been teaching Jeffrey how to weave wicker baskets recently / got to love it !!
although at first glance, or from a digital photo, anyway !!
the hat appears to be made from DIY multi-colored craft wicker (!!), it’s actually made from differently colored ‘bomb fuse’ wire . . . all the better – to BURN, BABY BURN !!!
this is one of Jeffrey’s more conservative, early attempts !!
in fact his first attempt. pretty darn good.
who doesn’t love a primitive – primitive ?
Jeffrey writes that Dylan Spaysky makes a lot of wicker-based work, and that “he taught me down by the boat slip that is our local swimming hole.”
in Detroit ? they have swimming holes ?
oh, Brooklyn, you are so over – and, you don’t even know it.

YULIA TPOCHIY’S exhibit, ‘Embodiers’ . . .
will present (currently) Detroit-based, metal-smith, performance, and object artist,
LAUREN KALMAN’S diverse, often craft-based & pretty much . . ‘out-spoken’ work platforms . .
. . including jewelry objects that reference erotic zones in the body titled, ‘Icons of the Flesh’.
” . . consisting of video, costumes, mask forms, installations and interactive jewelry . . .
Kalman uses craft mediums and decorative objects as a strategic choice. Minimalism, intellectual purity, health industry, and white male privilege are linked historically, and that link was codified aesthetically throughout the modernist period. Body adornment as decoration can be a necessary interruption to the myopic intellectual order of the established lineages of art and design and established cultural norms more broadly.
The legacy of modernism, minimalism, and the high arts (sculpture & painting), have historically privileged the cerebral over the corporeal. Crafts , in contrast have long been associated with domestic, bodily, and female.
As Kalman’s work deals largely with the female body, it calls upon historical associations with craft and the feminine.”
~Yulia Topchiy
LAUREN KALMAN . . is a visual artist whose practice “is invested in contemporary craft, video, photography, and performance.”
through her work, she investigates beauty, adornment, body image, and the built environment.
Raised in the Midwest, Kalman completed her MFA in art 7 technology from the Ohio State University & earned a BFA with a focus in Metals from Massachusetts College of Art. Exhibiting and lecturing internationally, she has been awarded several important residencies including Haystack, and also at the Santa Fe Art Institute.
(abridged from Topchiy)
KALMAN . . is currently an associate professor at Wayne State University, located in ‘vibrant’ downtown Detroit.
