well thank the lordy for little miracles, instead of NEW YORK . . . you could be living in COLOGNE – where’s it’s really happening, NOT !!
not unless you’ve got a fat, quote, “non-profit” – as your decade-old meal ticket, getting ratty and frayed at the edges, and way past its expiry date. cutting edge, ha. – not unless you’re dreamin’ as well as scheming.
scheming meaning, among other things: throwing big big bucks at top drawer, i.e. very expensive – p.r. firm.
it’s called: buzz for bucks, and it often results in . . fizzle. if the product is flat from the get-go.
nada still means nothing – whatever language you speak. and the ‘wart’ in newartdealers – rhymes with HORT. doesn’t it ?
sometimes it takes bankrolling a whole art fair’s worth of galleries – to get on a stage, that you’d surely be booted off of – in your own hometown. tastemakers ? ha. the cutting edge of wannabe, more like it. giving New York City a bad name, one pretentious art piece at a time. boring.

three: if anything, please god, could put the nail in the coffin of that played-out, and always was ugly term: ’emerging’ for artists – who aren’t mega-established, let’s hope this . . . does it. ho, I mean how !! about using ‘terrorized’ instead ?
as in, ‘terrorized’ artists ‘donating’ their work, if they want to stay in the ho-light ?

and of course – the web. ha. if we could only pull our bootstraps – up along with our science.
is that too boring, a thought ? the garden of Eden – is there a reason it’s forbidden. it better be a damn good one.
or extremely profound & huge. vast. unknown. just like the universe, or it’s inverse: nano-biology ? as we know it.

though it’s funny how those ancient ancestors got so much of the elemental stuff right. constellations, zodiacs and all.
I mean, the moon, the stars. they were basically – right.

the San Francisco author VIVIEN SUNG, relates a wonderful Chinese myth.
it’s called: ‘carp leaping over the dragon’s gate’ (!!)
“Each year, according to legend, carp swam the Yellow River upstream to spawn, and those able to leap the waterfall (!!) at the dragon’s gate, . . . were transformed into dragons. Since the Song dynasty (960-1279), the phrase ‘carp leaping over the dragon’s gate turning into a dragon’ . . . has been used as a metaphor for success”.
and, not from cheating, either !! for innate smarts and studying, i.e. scholarship.
leaping the waterfall. as opposed to ‘jumping the shark’, ha.
and yes, a goldfish is !! a small species of carp.
if you grew up on New York’s Lower East Side – there were always plenty in supply. they used to give them away in tiny plastic cups of water – as game prizes at the annual San Gennaro festivals in little Italy !!
I dunno, maybe the politically correct animal rights people – have done away with this ? I mean they did get nice ‘pet’ lives as opposed to being used as fish food – for the larger predator ‘pet’ fish, or even snakes. whatever. I’m just alivin’ to jump that waterfall, myself, it’s a consoling, even radiant, concept – in a world dominated by snakes, sharks and rats.
and aunt piggys. hang out with lawyers to right wrongs ? . . . and you’ll yearn for that waterfall too.
and I can just hear y’all going: ain’t that the truth.

RACE TIME: 8 PM.
YOU, LANDLOVERS !! CAN WATCH A LIVE RACE FEED from the CANALS of ZHUJIAJIAO, tomorrow – Sunday April 15, 2012 in MANHATTAN . . .
at the MAGNAN METZ GALLERY in Chelsea – 521 W.26 bet 10 + 11 Aves – with a race viewing party open to all / 6 – 10 PM.
or in BROOKLYN, at the EGG & DART CLUB – a SOCIAL CLUB just off the BROOKLYN NAVY YARD in FT. GREENE – ADVANCED RSVP NECESSARY – as of this am – only 8 tickets left.
according to the water loving’ BROOKLYN DUKE: thousands of years ago, the Chinese JADE EMPEROR initiated the zodiac in order to better organize the measurement of time, and to simplify the calendar – for his people – he decided to assign an animal to each year, in a 12 year cycle. Chinese mythology has it that to determine the sequential order in which each animal would appear – a ‘swimming race’ – amongst the twelve animals would be held, and this would become the SHENGXIAO, or Chinese zodiac. (and still referred to with great reverence & popularity – today, bye the bye.)
It is well known that the RAT, the winner of the race, cheated !! (now you know why the Chinese zodiac still lives on – some truths regarding animal, make that: human nature – never pale). anyways, despite that bit of super sleazy action, and perhaps as a nod to promote it ? the universal war-like ‘me-first’ human impulse – or is that, to . . better beware of it ?!! – this ancient match established a longstanding unchanged ‘order’ – the rat comes first !! – that has remained celebrated for centuries.
ancient flashback: The rat and the cat, both poor swimmers persuaded the gullible ox to carry them across. As the ox began to lead the pack, the rat pushed the cat overboard and jumped off the ox to win the race !! yep, no matter. the first year of the Chinese zodiac was bestowed upon the cheating rat. take note, seekers of ‘truth’ who wish to pull back the veil of the human condition: exploitation, conflict & war. it’s funny the Chinese didn’t try to retro-address this cultural ‘shading’ somewhere along the revolutionary way. well, guess it takes an artist from nifty Brooklyn – to try.
and, maybe they didn’t re-address it, because it’s a hard ingrained truth, that should keep coming up to the forefront, should be first up – in every 12 year Mother Goose cycle. yeah, there are cheaters, because . . . yeah: cheaters win. corporate charlies, papa docs, and aunt piggys – we all, global – face their dirty backwash – everyday. so . . .
IN THE INTEREST of FAIRNESS – the DUKE, DUKE RILEY – PROPOSES A – REMATCH !!
“Working with local artists and communities along the canals of Zhujiajiao, China – in APRIL 2012 – I will re-stage this race. All of the zodiac animals will be represented by actual live animals. Each will be ferried separately through the canals in boats paddled by expert rowers from the community. In addition, each boat will be decorated by a different local artist according to the animal it carries.” . . . “the river race and performance will take place on the Caogang River in the historic water village of Zhujiajiao on the outskirts of Shanghai. Each animal of the zodiac will be transported on a traditional gondola, accompanied by a local rower and an opera singer from Zhujiajiao. The singer will perform songs from the ‘first animal’ perspective, making a musical case for why that animal should have won the original race.”
note: this (artistic) rematch is taking place in YEAR 2012 – the Chinese Year of the (black water) DRAGON – a designation stressing the creative realm & highest aspirations – of the human mind & the imagination – !! aka ‘the leap’ !! from the earthly primitive bonds – to heaven.
I’m guessing, obviously, the mythological Duke Riley ‘dragon’ racer – is going to have be a . . . creative ‘stand-in’ ?

Although we just started recording in the bathroom of Eastern District Gallery a few months ago, With KOOL A.D.(of Das Racist) and production by GHOST DAD (of WIN WIN) are just some of the many blessings to come. . . . I first met CARL WEATHERS at EASTERN DISTRICT, Public School did several shows there when the space first opened. Carl is ‘family’ with the cutting edge fashion group – he’s related to one of the head designers, I’m thinking . . . MAXWELL OSBOURNE.
Public School / Black Apple were founded by menswear designers DAO-YI CHOW and MAXWELL OSBOURNE. Public School apparently became their hi-end brand, and Black Apple is more the off-the-rack, diffusion line.
DAO-YI CHOW and MAXWELL OSBOURNE talk about how the company(s) got started and then evolved – in this video link, below. if you’re quick enough you can catch a few early pix of . . . MICHAEL CABRERA, EASTERN DISTRICT’S founder and Creative Director. . . in the mix.
