I think it all started with that SIX KEYS TO HAPPINESS (?!!!) show, ‘Six Things: Sagmeister & Walsh’ at THE JEWISH MUSEUM, still up until August 4, 2013, bye the way . . . shortly followed by the museum’s tragic / magic . . . ‘JACK GOLDSTEIN x 10,000’ portrait.

red and black, the Hubert Dobler fused scewdrivers bespoke frustration, and ultimately: strength and insight, inspiration – going nowhere. and having to butt heads with its own dynamic.

I quickly realized I had seen this visual ‘statement’ / metaphor that speaks volumes . . . on the truly alive and kickin’ but mostly underground NYC art scene – in a slightly different format, but still red and black – via Brooklyn-based artist twin bro duo – SKEWVILLE . . . via BSA / BROOKLYN STREET ART.

well, he was born in L.A. but his mother’s from Montreal. almost the same deal.
and, well his ‘gallery’ is no longer called THE INTERCOURSE, that’s so over.

it’s now called . . . PIONEER WORKS, after the street the renovated used-to-be 19th C. warehouse, now studio/gallery/foundation/community center . . . is located on.
yes, it did get flooded in Sandy, but otherwise, it’s to die for.

you know. RED .. Hook, RED hot. Celeb romance. Ginger hair, RED. RED. RED. the works.
ok, so here’s the website: PIONEER WORKS, only the magazine is still called THE INTERCOURSE.
knock on wood, it’s actually a beautifully restored space, albeit with all the old interior guts – knocked out.
it’s got gorgeous gorgeous natural light. and they actually have some pretty good state-of-the-art classes. and, no kidding . . . the name change was a good thing.
hey, anytime a celeb dares come dance .. in the super hot art kitchen, it’s good for the art world.
question mark, bye the way (?).
at least it’s a little action.
makes up for all those crusty .. so ten years ago, art fairs.
let’s see. most recently. there was DEMI MOORE with VITO SCHNABEL. and before that, the longer lasting … MARY KATE OLSEN with NATE LOWMAN.
does MARK RUFFALO, and LEO DiCAPRIO, with GAVIN BROWN, count ?
these photos were taken just when the place was getting off the ground. beautiful huge space.
used to be a TIME/LIFE magazine, something like that .. warehouse.
the other end, with office space on the mezzanine.
word on the street was it cost 30 million in all, to buy and renovate, or just to renovate ?
what’s the diff. it might be a tad unrealistic, considering the potential for flood waters, as it faces the East River on one side. I guess there’s a fix – for that, no ?
but you have to give Dustin credit, he did a real archival job. like it was an old timepiece, a watch, instead of an old wood building.
it’s a lovin’ thing, right down to the original beams.
plus, banks of windows. it’s got gorgeous natural light, that just floods in.
that’s one of Dustin’s signature ‘serial’ plate glass pieces. who wouldn’t want to show in a space like this. even if you have to build it yourself.

beyond those windows is a garden, and beyond the garden is an industrial ‘port’ road, and then it’s the East River.
close-up of the glass piece from the side. it’s made from many layers of plate glass, which are collaged or otherwise drawn or painted on, and then they are melded together.
and yes, those mothers . . are heavy.

the garden was just being excavated.
those are industrial shipping facilities further on, next to the water.
the building . . it’s hard to guess from the outside, just what hollowed-out spatial madness lies within.
love how it’s been kept .. so low-key in the restoration.
the name change was – good.

so, who is . . . HUBERT DOBLER ?!!!
from his website, it seems he originates from VIENNA, AUSTRIA.
or, at least got his higher education there. interestingly he started off as an engineer (1980-85), who then went onto architecture (1989-91), and then did the ultimate cross-over – a MASTERS FINE ART DEGREE, also in Vienna 1992-95.
NEW YORK CITY starts to show up in his bio by 2003.
His work now seems to be hardcore ‘bike’-centric . . . with some nice cross-over into the land of conceptual, as well as pictorial.
and finally, lands heavy . . . on the side of ‘narrative’ abstract.

Their visual and literary art reflect the tension inherent in this double identity, a tension simultaneously challenging and productive, bewildering and enlightening.
“They are part of a large Russophone community, which has taken its place as part of America’s rich immigrant tradition. In recent years these artists have begun to play a significant role in New York’s cultural whirl. They enjoy , and are further confirmation of, New York’s reputation as the place to be for aspiring artists.
“At the same time they have a support system of art spaces, curators and networks dedicated to artists of the Russian and east European diaspora. Their American MFA’s make them simultaneously insiders, and outsiders — as outsider they are able to critique the contemporary art scene in its own language; as insiders they seek their place in the art historical narrative and endeavor to become part of the next phase in the post-modern canon.
