IT WAS .. ELECTRIC.
IT WAS GLAM. IT WAS FUN !! THAT FOR SURE !! THE NIGHT OF THE SEASON, or at least this month (!!) .. no doubt about it.

I think what threw me off balance when I first entered, was not the just the cutting edge celebrity wattage, and the big glam .. surge !!
but, the .. scale.
re: attack of the ‘giant’ galleries, this attack was large, only in the sense of a multi-branch international .. gallery. as opposed to simply a large ‘spatial’ viewing thing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. big things bomb too, haha – no names today !!
I’m up to being elegant, when I want . . to.
it’s just I didn’t re-adjust my perceptional radar immediately ..
the fact that the work literally leapt out at you – from the above, and rolled around in the aisles .. contributed to this initial disorientation, and that was a good thing.
to be caught off balance, in a hi-end gallery .. what a riot. yes !!
well, that was all part of the serious .. fun. I started to pace my innate paparazzi hound dog instincts, to the actual floor space .. and things got better. everyone was tremendously gracious & in very good spirits. there was real excitement in the air.
yep, SWIZZ BEATZ and PHARREL WILLIAMS.
if you google either one, the first thing that pops up is: estimated net worth !!
haha, Swizz Beatz is worth an estimated $65 million, and Pharrel is worth an estimated $80 million. that’s a whole lot of star wattage !! just there.
but the best part of running into these guys, is the talent surge. off the grid. beyond the meter. making eye contact with Pharrel .. is like looking into the stairway to heaven. he loved Kate’s boots, they were both wearing similar white snakeskin-hued leather ankle boots, but this last sentence might have to self-destruct in 24 hrs, when Kate gets awind of it !!
he liked Kate, who doesn’t ?
he told her: “nice boots”. omg.
he knew a ‘local’ – born & raised on the Bowery back in the day .. of BASQUIAT & KEITH HARING, JACK GOLDSTEIN & even DAN ASHER !! when he saw it.

in fact I don’t recall JEFFREY DEITCH ever being so happy.
does absence make the heart grow fonder, I guess so !!

PAOLA PIVI, the Italian artist, born in Milan in 1971 – was the artist of the night. but strangely, or humbly, or by nature .. she was keeping a low profile. maybe her show’s title, “Ok, you are better than me, so what?’ was a clue ..?
at any rate she was right about one thing, everybody gets leveled back to day one .. when they enter this city !! Enter at your own risk, and out your hands up, while you are at it, too.
eat you up & spit you out. is us.
the expression: don’t come into the kitchen, if you can’t take the heat .. comes to mind.
and plus, there’s tons of super talented homies, ahead of you in the line .. so watch how you step on the home turf.. baby !!

this piece – leapt out at ya, from above the entry doorway. yep, Paulo was letting her work, speak for her. a ‘conceptual’ artist, who seems to have a way with words, in her titles at least, she lives and works in Anchorage, ALASKA, but is currently in India (!!) .. so, I bet she doesn’t take to casual banter, or what !!

well .. on first encounter, the bears and I were mutually .. quizzical. they were so .. ethereal, you felt you could walk right thru them. I was thinking, this is the anti-Damien Hirst .. ?

this life-size piece was downstairs, and my first thought was: BORIS RASIN and KENNY KOMER .. eat your hearts out. had she seen .. their ‘money machine’ at Gavin Brown’s ?
what I did love about it, was how it had inclined proportions, and was built like a tank, or a fort, for real. the cobalt blue hue .. was just wild.
detail. it had somebody inside throwing out money, but you could put money in it, as well.. so then I was getting flashbacks to that Gelitin installation, where you put artifacts in, and got handmade, rather crude replicas .. back.
but don’t get me wrong.
if money machines are some kind of new subtext, genre – I’m down with that.
but the amount of money it was spewing, the money on the floor was disappointing. I mean if you, the gallery .. spend gobs & gobs of dough on the upper east side space, and the blow-out after party . . wtf ? you go cheap on the main attraction ?
all the machine seemed to spew was a couple of measly one dollar bills, and a handful of coins ? not even enough to have enticed the ghost of .. SIMON CERIGO !!
damn, it would have been so much more fun to have seen some real $$$ dough .. dispersed !!
and, then watch to see whether any of those fab chicks in their lbds / little black dresses, and 7 inch heels .. would have stooped down, and become .. ‘pickers’ !!

looks like I really kicked a hornets nest .. on that one.
so: ‘BITCH STOLE MY LOOK’ – TAKE TWO.
that show-stopping, super seductive life-size hyper realist chick .. about to disrobe in Perrotin’s new lower level, is NOT by CATTELAN. it’s by DANIEL FIRMAN.
I guess I jumped to conclusions since Cattelan’s work is widely known here in NYC, while Firman’s is not. I guess it all just comes down to sculpture – realist sculpture – as old as the Greeks.
with it’s newest ‘take’/ hi-tech plastic technology .. probably harking back to DUANE HANSON.
though it’s an interesting topic. competitive branding / signature ‘look’. once the hi-tech technology becomes more accessible – the new ‘marble’ .. then it’s the ‘concept’ .. that really counts ?
I’m sure I accidentally .. touched on something.
I mean, just backing off of these guys, for a moment. doesn’t anybody else trace a line from JEFF KOONS’ steel balloon bunnies . . to KAWS’ recent MOONMAN, that also looked totally ‘blown up’ at the seams. just saying.
it’s an interesting dialog. and it’s NOT NEW.
it goes back through art history .. groups of very individual, super competitive artists .. riffing and dialoging on the same theme, in the same material. the American Abstract Expressionists, for example. I guess it’s what they used to call: ‘schools’ in the ole days. also popping up in thought: the recent Impressionist show at the MET, which showcased very identical on the surface, but absolutely different ‘garden’ scenes between MONET, MANET, RENOIR, etc.

and, yeah.
on second glance, it’s obvious. Cattelan is more ‘political’ in the curve-balls he throws. from what I saw of Firman’s work online – he is more poetic, more philosophical. I see more of Duane Hanson’s influence, the ‘accidental’ tourist in his realism. whereas Cattelan’s work never fades into, or merges into ambience or poetry, unless you want to call the poetry of political rebellion .. ambience ?
in Firman’s work there is a mystery. in Cattelan’s there is a call .. to action.
takes 2 to tango.
so, that being said:

let’s hope Cattelan the Prankster .. can take a joke. he plays plenty, himself.
I mean, wasn’t he supposed to be .. retiring ?!!!
of course, the biggest joke was the 99% en bulk of the so-called art critics in this town !! who played themselves to be fools, too kind a word – when they collectively trashed ‘ALL’ .. Cattelan’s awesome awesome ‘hanging’ retrospective at the Guggenheim, en masse. one of the best shows this town has seen in decades .. with lines that went around the block – to get in. the day I went, MARC JACOBS was seen .. just rolling with delight !!
I may make my mistakes, but they pale .. in comparison to that mass misstep.

PERROTIN had a few works by his gallery artists scattered in the lower level exhibition space.
this one was the BEST.
and it fooled a lot of people !! including myself, apparently.
I had thought it to be by Cattelan,
but it was by DANIEL FIRMAN, and it was SEAMLESS.
and I mean, s-e-a-m-l-e-s-s. perfect. in concept & production. absolutely life-like. mysterious, caught you off-guard, just around a little bend in the most tucked away part of the gallery. I watched as several people backed away in embarrassment .. for having thought they had accidentally intruded .. into a private space.
a private moment.
I wonder if the setting, was the real ‘office’ kichenette, or purely a fictional prop, made-up. I’m thinking, yes – it is the actual office/kitchen annex ?
the best part was: I just happened to be in the right spot, at the right time, to overhear JEFFEREY DEITCH, remark to someone who had just led him to the ‘forbidden’ site of undress .. state in very good humor, something like .. “haha, I’ve seen that before.” !!
he was of course referring to his BARRY McGEE exhibit, of 2005.
hence, the ‘BITCH STOLE MY STYLE’ .. gibe.
all in all, JEFFREY seemed in the best spirits – I have ever seen him in. he was always a little uptight and, well – cranky, at his own openings. does absence make the heart grow fonder ? I’m thinking: yeah.
and, is that sentiment .. a 2 way street ?

BEARS, BEARS, and more BEARS.
SIGNS, SIGNALS & ICONS . . .
CASH.
the PERROTIN after party for their NYC launch .. was in word: ABSOLUTELY FAB.
it took place at the RUSSIAN TEA ROOM, and was set in stages, with a dinner/buffet first, and then carnival reveling with gallery artists .. and late night dance party following. the dinner was lavish. the food was just spectacular. baked salmon in dough, roast beef and some kind of lobster/seafood .. served plentifully at manned stations, roaming servers with trays piled high with small specalities. open bar. 2 of them. all of it was sublime, and normally high-charged New Yorkers just sat back, and relaxed .. in the darkened and ‘stained glass’ ambience.
of course, I was struck ‘speechless’ by almost the first thing I noticed. at the Russian Tea Room .. a couple of curio cabinets adorned with a collection of Russian icons, and .. those ever-famous nesting dolls.
yeah I had my ‘radar’ in place .. moment. that for sure.
PAREIDOLIA: psychological phenomena that seeks to find meaning in RANDOM STIMULI.
APOPHENIA: the spontaneous perception of connections & meaningfulness of UNRELATED phenomena – URBAN DICTIONARY.
SERENDIPITY: a very good coincidence, often leading to something really AWESOME !! – URBAN DICTIONARY
ALEATORIC: meaning “music of chance” !! – URBAN DICTIONARY
even in the huge experience pool – that is NEW YORK CITY, you can find .. signs in patterns, that re-affirm your individual path amongst the teeming millions.
that for sure.
daily life, is just a another TAROT CARD, thrown down at your feet . .
the big trick is to .. catch the ball when it’s thrown in your direction.
… and run with it.
I guess that’s why the Russian culture, mired in bleak winter-dominated culture .. is so icon-dominated ?

inside the Russian Tea Room .. the decor had the worn-in look of .. opulence, stained glass windows, and Faberge eggs – gone large. but not huge. there was nice warm glow – about the place .. it was fab.
it was fab to be invited to such a luxe scene, Perrotin – check, check and more CHECK.
as in alright, dude !! right on.
it didn’t feel spanking new, which was also a relief, on the senses – it had the worn-in look of comfort … grand ambience that approaches.. background.
but fab background, know what I mean ?
there was even a giant glass Russian dancing bear, a juggling bear .. I guess a riff on centerpiece ice sculpture . .
up close, you could see a water line, it was water filled . . .
and those flitting coppery shadows ?
goldfish !!
so yeah I had a DAMIEN HIRST MOMENT !!
no, not the sharks / sheep in formaldehyde. the fish tanks/aquariums .. in OB GYN offices !!
wow, how do they get in there and keep that unconventional aquarium — so clean.

SOME INTERNATIONAL UNDERGROUND NEWS, JUST IN FROM: SERGEJ VUTUC ..
I post this, not just because the graphics are superlative, and the content is a-m-a-z-i-n-g, but because it is interesting to look beyond our little island bursting with cutting edge ‘creatives’ .. to see how American culture, the best of it – the drive and strive for personal freedom and freedom of e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-on .. is like a seed that blows around the whole world and often sets off a spark on a foreign shore, that is very different in it’s impact & endurance – than it’s ‘current’ cultural ‘footprint’ – here at home.

turns out to be an auspicious date – weather-wise.
the gods were NOT smiling down on the art world last night.
all the openings last nite – got rained out, and I mean rained out !!
severe pounding rain, lightning, thunder, the works – from exactly 7-9 PM. so that was that.
today is sunny & like .. butter would not melt in your mouth. rain, what rain ?
the first show is called, ‘UP IN SMOKE’ – it’s a group show featuring works by: JOSEPH HART, MATT LEINES, LEIF LOW-BEER, PAUL WACKERS and RYAN WALLACE.
the show will run thru OCT 6, 2013.
